About the 2x2 picture size

A 2x2 picture is a square photo exactly 2 × 2 inches (5.08 × 5.08 cm, which the US State Department rounds to 51 × 51 mm). It is the photo size for US passports and US visas, for green card applications (USCIS Form I-485) and for NBI clearance applications filed from abroad through Philippine consulates.

Unacceptable photos are the number one reason the State Department puts passport applications on hold. The rules:

The JPG carries its DPI (300, or 600 for the sharper option), so it prints at a true 2 inches at 100 % from a computer. For uploads, the DV lottery wants exactly 600 × 600 px; the 1200 × 1200 option is meant for printing and usually comes out over the DS-160’s 240 KB limit.
