HK passport photo online

40 × 50 mm, width × height: the passport photo size Hong Kong’s Immigration Department (ImmD) sets for the HKSAR passport photograph, with the head 32 mm to 36 mm from chin to crown, sufficient headroom and a plain white background. That is 4 × 5 cm; the HK passport photo size in inches is 1.57 × 1.97; at 600 DPI — the resolution ImmD names for scanned photographs — it is 945 × 1181 px (472 × 591 px at 300 DPI). The HK passport photo size ratio is 4:5; the 1200 × 1600 px digital-camera image accepted online is 3:4. Pick “Printed photograph — 40×50 mm” and the tool crops to exactly that size and draws the 32–36 mm chin band.

The HKSAR passport photo requirements for a digital file: a JPEG of 5 MB or below, at least 1200 × 1600 px (width × height) if captured by a digital camera, or a 40 × 50 mm photograph captured by a scanner at 600 dpi — so the Hong Kong passport photo format ImmD lists for upload is JPEG. ImmD gives this file format for photographs submitted through the Internet or its Mobile App for passport applications only, and the photo itself follows the same rules as a print: full frontal face, plain white background, no head dress. The “Online application” preset crops to 1200 × 1600 px, saves a JPEG and confirms it is 5 MB or below. Online applications are open to holders of a valid Hong Kong permanent identity card (or an acknowledgement of application for one); they are not applicable to replacing a lost, damaged or defaced passport or to amending personal particulars, and the new passport is collected in person. ImmD’s application page gives no separate photo rule for a replacement passport, so the HK passport renewal photo size is the same 40 × 50 mm or 1200 × 1600 px.

ImmD does not say who must take the photograph. Its requirements page speaks to you directly (“When you take the photograph, please do not wear head dress…”), and for Internet and mobile-app applications it accepts an image captured by a digital camera of at least 1200 × 1600 px, so a phone or camera photo taken at home fits that description. ImmD assesses it afterwards: “Whether the successfully uploaded photograph meets the requirements has yet to be determined. If necessary, we may request you to submit another photograph to process your application.” So follow the rules before you shoot — plain white background, full frontal face, no shadow, no flash reflection, no hair across the eyes or eyebrows, not too light or too dark — then crop it here. One: ImmD’s application page asks for “a recent colour photograph with white background” when you apply in Hong Kong in person, by post or by drop-in; for a child who does not have a Hong Kong permanent identity card, “an additional colour photograph identical to the one mentioned above” — two in total. Applying outside Hong Kong through a Chinese Diplomatic and Consular Mission or an Immigration Division of a Mainland Office takes “three recent colour photographs with white background”, and four for such a child. Applications through the Internet or the ImmD Mobile Application take one uploaded JPEG. The print sheet here holds 4 identical 40 × 50 mm copies on one 4 × 6 in print, which covers each of these counts.

ImmD asks you not to wear head dress and to avoid heavy make-up and overly dark or overly light-coloured clothing. Glasses are not on that list, but the photograph is not accepted if the applicant is “wearing a frame across eyes” or “seen with flash reflection on face/glasses”, and ImmD’s examples of unacceptable photographs show head coverings, hair across the eyes or eyebrows, a shadow, a face that is not centred, too dark and too light exposure, and prints that were stapled or clipped. Hair off the eyebrows, no hat, mid-tone clothing and a white wall avoid each item on that list; the tool changes none of this, it only crops.

It checks the file, not the face. On the “Online application” preset it produces a JPEG of exactly 1200 × 1600 px and confirms it is 5 MB or below (the status line reads “under 5000 KB ✓”) — JPEG, at least 1200 × 1600 px and 5 MB or below are the file rules ImmD publishes for a digital-camera image; on the printed preset it gives exactly 40 × 50 mm at 600 DPI. It does not judge the background, shadows, glasses, expression or the 32–36 mm head size (the guide lines only help you frame), and it does not remove a background. ImmD checks the photograph after you upload it and may ask for another one.

Download the print sheet: a 4 × 6 in JPG at 600 DPI with 4 copies of the 40 × 50 mm photo and grey cut lines. Order it as a normal 4 × 6 in print at 100 % — actual size, with no fit, fill or borderless option — then cut along the lines. A single 40 × 50 mm JPG ordered as an ordinary print at a photo lab or print kiosk gets scaled to the paper size and comes out wrong; printing that single file from a computer at 100 % works, because it carries its 600 DPI. ImmD adds: do not fold, staple or write on the back of the photograph, and do not attach it to the form with a paper clip — a postal or drop-in application with a substandard photograph is returned unprocessed.

No. The crop, the JPEG and the print sheet are drawn inside your browser, on your own device; nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is stored. HEIC photos from an iPhone are decoded on the device too. Once the page has loaded you can even switch Wi-Fi off — JPG, PNG and WebP photos still work.
